¡YMR Presénte! How We Get Down: Membership has its privileges. For those who’d like to see their music appear on future YMR albums and shows, this workshop is for you. New YMR participants are required to take this introductory course, highlighting the culture and privileges that come with being a member of the crew. This is the nuts and bolts of why YMR continues to be the most successful youth-led urban music conservatory in the Bay! Artist Development: Performers who have original songs and are prepared to workshop material in anticipation of performance at YMR shows throughout the summer and fall. Performers will develop their stage persona, and comfort level in front of any crowd 5-500! (Friday 1p, Instructor: Rashidi Omari, Company of Prophets, Destiny Arts, Unsmokables – enrollment 5-10, prerequisite ¡YMR Presénte!)
Beat Production: Make the next hit track for YMR with one of Oakland’s up and coming producers. Become studied in the art of constructing a bridge, drops and fills, and sample-free beat making. (Thursday 3pm, Instructor: Sean Christian, Zion I, Tenure – enrollment 4-6)
Deejay Seminar: Learn scratching and mixing records for parties and studio sessions. This is one of the most employable performance skills you can have in music. If you’re really trying to have a career in Hip-Hop or you just love music, check out this class. (Wednesday 1pm, Instructor, DJ Treat U Nice – enrollment 4-6)
Freestyle: Rappers, graduate to Emcee status with this opportunity to cipher, battle, and freestyle. Show your skills at our monthly in-house performance showcase “Mad-Hatter’s Tea Party”, every 3rd Thursday. All ability levels welcome. Hip-Hip Chorus: Express your inner voice and love of Hip-Hop while practicing pitch, tone, and voicing for performance and recording. This ain’t yo mama’s choir. (Instructor Kimiko Joy: Tuesday & Thursday @ 1pm – enrollment 6-12)
Pro-tools Workshop: Lean how to engineer your own sessions, record vocals and mix-songs with one of the most sought after engineers in the industry, and one of the designers of the modern Digi-Design system. (Thursday 5:00pm, Instructor: Fred Thomas – enrollment 4-6)
YMR House-band, The Backline: Hip-Hop’s biggest hits come to life in this seminar for aspiring instrumentalists and skilled musicians alike. If you’re interested in learning some of Hip-Hop’s standards, and Oakland’s latest slumpers, come through and learn from one of the best multi-instrumentalists in the Bay. (Wednesday 11am, Instructor, Raul Perales, La Familia Son – enrollment 3-6, all experience levels welcome).
